Bible Sales Funding Abortion?

December 12, 2011

There seems to be a Bible for everything these days.    Unfortunately very few are focused on the infallible Word of God.  Many are designed to promote a particular social view.  Now a division of Lifeway has printed The Susan G. Komen Foundation’s Here’s Hope: Breast Cancer Awareness Bible.

It’s worth repeating… Komen funds Planned Parenthood with donations intended for breast cancer prevention.  Planned Parenthood’s main activity is abortion, a known breast cancer risk factor.  If Komen donations are used for PP, what are the odds that some of the profits from the Komen Bible find their way to Planned Parenthood?

So now the Bible can help fund abortion?  That’s definitely not hope!  Real hope is only found in personal faith in the Jesus Christ of the Word of God.

“The best things in life are nearest:  Breath in your nostrils, light in your eyes, flowers at your feet, duties at your hand, the path of right just before you.  Then do not grasp at the stars, but do life’s plain, common work as it comes, certain that daily duties and daily bread are the sweetest things in life.”

Political Emancipation

November 2, 2011

On the recommendation of a friend who recently heard the author speak, I recently read Political Emancipation: Observations of a Black Man Who Rejected Liberal Indoctrination by Andre Harper.

As a political activist I found Mr. Harper’s journey to conservatism enlightening.  He articulates the issues we do not naturally understand because we have not lived in the same environment with the same daily circumstances.  If we are honest with ourselves he exposes core differences in our thinking which create a sharp divide when we try to articulate and implement our conservative ideas.  Why Mr. Harper rejects liberalism is not necessarily identical to why we do nor does the way he embraces his beliefs feel comfortable to us.  Andre Harper’s personal story makes me think of a missionary friend who says, “You can know
all about our work and where we live, but you cannot understand it fully until you experience it.”

I borrowed my friend’s book and it was heavily highlighted with notes.  It fascinated me that the two of us read the same words and yet focused on different points.  I agreed with my friend’s comments on specific text.  Still I was seeing things through
my unique eyes, deciphering new information into my personal experiences.

Understanding the Black acceptance of liberalism and the root causes is something I spend quite a bit of time trying to do.  I am blessed to be the mother-in-law of two Black men reared in the inner city.    How can we share so many ideas, but come to completely different conclusions?  I can say how things should be from my rural, middle class, white reformed Christian background and it makes perfect sense.  Why can’t everyone see it?  It’s so simple, right?

Andre Harper is not preachy, but he explains nuances of the Black experience that have entrenched a distinct mentality.  This ethnic history has allowed liberals to continue to enslave a whole race, both socially and economically, for their own purposes.  I can see more clearly why our in-laws’ conclusions are so different.   They have lived a different experience and their heritage has been used against them by those who purport to be their best friends.

Andre Harper should be one model for the 21st century Black man – someone who embraces his history while choosing to see the world as it exists today.  I want to see many more Andre Harpers; and, I am self-centered enough to want them to include my fourteen multi-racial grandchildren who are living in the city, going to public schools and learning their identities and worth from their environment and our unique family.

I found the book to be an invaluable read and highly recommend it for everyone.
